Pope John Paul II, Dies at 84

Remembered as a Church Shepard and World Catalyst

THE VATICAN -- Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla, died today Saturday, April 2, 2005 in the evening, the Vatican spokesperson, Joaquín Navarro Valls said in a statement.

The Pope John Paul II headed the Roman Catholic Church since 1978, the third-longest papal reign in history.

The news was immediately announced to around 70,000 gathered in St Peter's Square and was met with a long applause, an Italian sign of respect. Bells tolled and many people wept openly.

The end of a papacy sets in motion both a highly ritualized, centuries-old tradition and a deeply human one -- politicking and coalition building.
