For the first time ever, Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock is offering up to three merit-based scholarships to incoming ninth grade students for the 2016-2017 school year.
The Mercy Opportunity Scholarships are four-year tuition awards, ranging from $4,000 to $8,000 annually, which seek to identify students interested in the benefits of a Mount St. Mary Academy education, to honor their academic achievement, and to inspire increased support for all-girl, Catholic education sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.
The Mercy Opportunity Scholarships award extraordinary intellectual promise and the desire for a Mount St. Mary education based on a timed essay as well as the strength of academic records and the Mount St. Mary admissions application.
The scholarships are renewable for four years, provided the recipients remain in good standing with the school and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
“Our alumnae are well recognized for being leaders in their homes, their churches, their careers and their communities,” says Karen Flake, the school’s president and CEO. “Our students thrive within the all-girl, faith-based environment here at Mount St. Mary Academy, and we want that experience to be attainable for all young women in Central Arkansas.”
Mount St. Mary students confirm year after year what research findings report: Students at single-sex schools enjoy higher academic performance and are better prepared for college, possess more self-confidence and leadership skills and are more encouraged in areas like math and science.
Mount St. Mary Academy’s Class of 2015 received over $10 million in scholarship offerings from collegiate and other institutions.
Catholic traditions of teaching and service embodied by the school’s founders, the Sisters of Mercy, inspire an education of the “whole person” through faith development and campus ministry. Students of all faith traditions are given the opportunity to deepen their relationships with God through prayer groups, retreats and all-school liturgies, and a service learning program encourages Mount St. Mary students to live Gospel values through service to others by volunteering at over 20 service sites in the community during their junior year.
“For 165 years, Mount St. Mary Academy has prepared students for college and life success through its unique blend of faith and academics,” attests President Flake. “The Mount stands poised and ready for the next chapter in our history, and we invite the next generation of young women to meet their challenges of the future as women of wisdom, compassion and integrity.”
